Description

Ski Touring in Norway, it is a great choice for those who want to ski in the Northern Wilderness, visiting one of the most sought-after destinations in Northern Europe.

The trips we will undertake start from sea level or not far from it and by climbing you can almost always see the fjords with a thousand reflections of light.

The typical day begins with breakfast at our accommodation and a transfer by car of about 1 hour. Once the skins are put on, we climb for 800-1200m of altitude difference, (difficulty MS/BS) and usually return to the starting point.

The peaks that we can climb have names that evoke the Vikings:

  • Tromsdalstinden – Tromso’s mountain, a bit long if done in a traverse, much more direct if approached from its south-east side. A classic.
  • Buren – wonderful trip to the island of Kvaloia, on the ocean side.
  • Istinden – “probably the peak with the best view from the top” (quote) Super trip in the Lyngen Alps, mountaineering and demanding, only possible with excellent snow conditions and with a trained and motivated group.
  • Rema 1000 – although it has the name of the supermarket, it offers 1000 meters of beautiful skiable slopes, as also in the nearby and similar Nordfjellet, both on the east side of Ringvassoya

Often you start from the fjord and ski back to the sea. The last turns may not have perfect snow, but taking the skis off at the beach is something that leaves us really satisfied!

Tromso: travel, accommdoation and logistics

For our Ski Touring trip in Norway – Tromso & Lyngen Alps, we chose Tromso as the base of our activities, in the North of Norway.

Reachable in 2 hours of flight from Oslo, despite being the largest city in the great north (80 thousand inhabitants) it is pleasant and interesting from a historical-artistic point of view.

The streets of the center, partly pedestrian, are pleasant and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants.

Beautiful Norway, unfortunately, is expensive, and also offers few local culinary specialties: the reindeer fillet with cranberries, salmon and herring, usually offered for breakfast, are excellent, and we could certainly go to the restaurant to enjoy them all together.

However, we preferred the formula of self-managed dinners, to keep costs down and to form a group by telling each other stories and preparing the dishes all together. We will organize ourselves for breakfast and dinner, according to everyone’s preferences. For lunch, however, we will always be in the mountains.

The supermarkets in Tromso offer all kinds of food, and you don’t need to bring anything from Italy. We will organize ourselves on site and do the shopping when necessary.

The transfers will be with the minivan that we will rent for the occasion. It will be big enough to accommodate everyone, including ski equipment.

Our accommodation in Tromso

We will have a Lodge at Tromsdalen, the valley in front of Tromso, a few minutes drive from the center. It is also possible to reach Tromso by public transport.

It has three double rooms with single beds, complete with linen and towels. The bathroom with shower is shared with the other guests.

It has an equipped kitchen, with various dishes and pots, refrigerator and stove. Wifi is available and free.

Our Ski routine

The day usually starts with the alarm clock at 7.30 and breakfast, so as to leave Tromso at 8-8.30, depending on the destination.

The closest trips can be reached in 10-15 minutes by car, for the most distant ones it takes even a couple of hours, so in these cases the alarm clock will be a little earlier.

The ideal is to start with skis on your feet at 9-9.30 to finish the trip in the afternoon.

Once back in Tromso, there will be time to freshen up and enjoy an aperitif, directly at our lodge, or in one of the many bars in the center of Tromso.

Dinner can be from 19.00 to 20.00 in order to leave time for a pleasant evening, where, whoever wants, can certainly go out for a night walk in the center.

Frequently asked questions

Meeting the 22nd of March in Tromso

Basic ski touring/mountaineering equipment required. In particular, warm clothing is recommended to be able to stay on the deck of the sailing ship and enjoy the view and the possible Northern Lights. Although the trips normally do not generally require a harness, ice ax and crampons, we recommend bringing them as they can sometimes be useful for climbing the last ridge or short steep slopes below the summit.

You should be able to ski on black runs, on all types of snow. On all our programs snowboarders and telemarkers are welcome.

For all the organization of your flights, for insurance, and for any other travel service, we advise you to refer to the Travel Agency which takes care of the technical organization of our adventure trips, and of which we will give you the references in the your request.
