About this activity

Lofoten Ski&Sail, skiing in Norway’s Fjords

Lofoten Ski&Sail is an epic holidays which will catapult you into the most beautiful wild lands of the North, skiing in one of the most evocative landscapes for skiing between Land, Sea and Sky. All this aboard a comfortable and wonderful sailing ship.

Lofoten Islands

In the north of Norway, between Bodo and Harstad, a series of islands jut out towards the ocean, drawing a 160 km long arc, dotted with steep and fascinating peaks, which offer a unique playground for the most demanding ski mountaineer, where the beauty of the place can be appreciated on itineraries of any difficulty.

From the summit of Geitgallien towards the Austnesfjorden and the open sea. The northern lights in late winter take on all the colors of grey, often contaminated by the deep blue of the ocean and the dazzling white that mixes the rocks of the peaks. At the end of March there are also lights at night, and what lights these Northern Lights are! The Northern Lights need three ingredients to paint the night sky in green and purple hues: darkness, clear skies, and a little patience and luck. We put on the darkness (at the end of March the period is optimal), the weather – meaning weather – is not in control, and for patience and luck you’ll take care of it! But the show will be mystical.

Description

Lofoten Ski&Sail is the perfect holiday for those who want to immerse themselves in dream landscapes and ski on the beautiful slopes overlooking the sea. Lunar scenery, quality powder and breathtaking descents are the ingredients of skiing in Norway.

Every day we will ski in a different place, with trips ranging from 800 to 1200 meters of altitude difference. All this will be decided day by day, based on snow conditions, weather and the group’s abilities.

We will tackle classic itineraries (like Kvittinden, Rundfjellet, Vagakallen) but also trips that can only be reached by sailing boat, far from the crowd and on virgin slopes.

Lofoten Ski&Sail is a Journey, it’s not just going up and skiing. Lofoten Ski&Sail is seeing unusual natural phenomena, it is immersing yourself in wild nature, it is meeting the habits of local people.

Life on board

Day starts between 7.00 and 8.00 with breakfast on board, with a wide choice of salt and sweet food. After breakfast, preparing for the ski day.

After the trip, upon return we will be welcomed on board with a snack and we will be able to shower and rest.

One of the magical moments of this holiday will be in the late afternoon when, sailing from destination to destination, we will be able to enjoy the unforgettable landscapes of the Norwegian Fjords, during the golden hour and the sunsets overlooking the sea.

You will enjoy the dinner in a calm and sheltered place where you can spend a beautiful evening.

Our Sailing Boat: Stella Oceana

Stella Oceana is a two-masted Ketch-type sailing ship, characterized by an elegant and refined design. She flies the Norwegian flag and is a certified passenger vessel with classification 1c, which means she can navigate in ice up to 50 cm thick. These characteristics mean that Stella Oceana sails in a stable, slow and regular way, ideal for enjoying the fjords and islands of the Arctic, also reaching remote and unusual areas, not always accessible to ships of similar or larger dimensions.

Stella Oceana is the most spacious sailing boat in Arctic Norway. There are 2 exterior decks and a large interior lounge with high ceilings and windows. With only 8 guests on a 100 foot (30 m) yacht, space is guaranteed for everyone, and with maximum comfort.

And on the bow deck there is the hot tub, a Finnish tub, suitable for regenerating after a day of skiing. But can you imagine how pleasant it is to immerse yourself in hot water while it’s snowing or sip a drink under the sky streaked by the dancing light of the Northern Lights, inside the Finnish tub?

Prerequisites

You should be able to ski on black runs, on all types of snow. On all our programs snowboarders and telemarkers are welcome.

Equipment required

Basic ski touring/mountaineering equipment required.

In particular, warm clothing is recommended to be able to stay on the deck of the sailing ship and enjoy the view and the possible Northern Lights.

Although the trips normally do not generally require a harness, ice ax and crampons, we recommend bringing them as they can sometimes be useful for climbing the last ridge or short steep slopes below the summit.
