About this activity

Sail and climb in the beautiful Trieste Gulf

Sail and climb in Trieste Gulf it is the perfect opportunity to climb the magnificent cliffs overlooking the sea of the Gulf of Trieste, combining the pleasure of navigation and the spectacular views of the cliffs and castles of the Riviera.

Trieste Gulf is the perfect playground for sailing and rock climbing. Located at the top of the Adriatic Sea, all its coast is surrounded by limestone, high cliffs and the beautiful Carso-Karst hills.

It offers wonderful climbing in all grades of difficulty, and is often sunny and windy starting from the Spring. Trieste as a sailing spot, is famous for the the Barcolana, one of the most crowded regattas in the world and for its northern to north-eastern katabatic wind, called Bora.

There are beautiful small bays and harbors all along the coast of the Trieste Gulf, where we can anchor and head to the cliffs. Some spots we may even be able to climb right in view of our boat, some other to reach, we might need to drive shortly. We will sail close to the Castle of Miramare, Duino and Muggia, all built just on the cliffs above the sea.

The airport of Trieste, Venice and Lubjana have regular flights from most european cities.

Description

The varied Trieste area allows you to try your hand at numerous outdoor activities. The ease of access to these activities and the beauty of the rock and the Territory have made this area famous, defining it as a must-visit destination.

You can have fun on a climbing crag suited to your level or try your hand at a course that will allow you to be independent on this activity.

Furthermore, if you have a few days to dedicate to us, we will be able to let you experience various activities, from Via Ferrata, to trekking, to the exploration of famous caves, to canyoning, to Mountain Bike and E-Bike, all followed totally by our IFMGA Guides and MTB Instructors.

You just have to call us!

On this trip we will aim at a fair balance between sailing, climbing, enjoy the fresh Adriatic fish and the delicious local wine. Sailing days will be short (2 to 4 hours per day), so we can keep time for rock climbing. We will sail the boat every day to a new place, and climb on at least 5 different sites (depending on the preferences of the group, we can tip the balance towards either more sailing or more climbing). We will also keep some time ashore to discover the landscapes, villages and historical traditions of Trieste.

Depending on the sea and weather condition the program can be changed.

Prerequisites

No previous experience in either sailing or climbing is required. The skipper and the mountain guide will teach you all you need to know to sail the boat and take your first steps on the rocks. We will teach you how to put on the harness, use the gear, make the knots, belay, and we will give you advice to develop your climbing technique. Depending on your level of experience, you may also try some lead climbing or multi-pitches. There’s lots for those with climbing experience too.

Itinerary

The boat will wait you in Muggia, the historical town of Istria peninsula and ancient Venice colony. We have a briefing and we spend the first night on the boat in Muggia harbour, having an aperitif in front a nice sunset in front of the Adriatic sea.

First climbing morning will be in Val Rosandra, the most extensive climbing site of Trieste and is made up of a series of many buttresses and it also offers some multi-pitch routes. It has been the traing place of Emilio Comici, the beginner of ”sixth grade” climbing and the first climber of Tre Cime di Lavaredo north face. Back to the boat we will sail to Trieste and anchor by the harbour Bacino San Giusto, just in front of the downtown. There will be some time for visiting the old Medievel town and have dinner in a typical local fish restaurant.

Morning wake up and tour to the historical beauty of the town, starting with the San Giusto Castel, before driving for 15 minutes to Prosecco-Napoleonica. There are many single pitches sport routes with a variety of climbing, for the beginners to the experienced climbers, easy slabs and great overhangs. The spot is not only famous for the bouldering (considered as the first bouldering area in Italy) and for the great view of the north side of Adriatic sea, but also for the famous Italian Prosecco wine. In Prosecco village the grape and wine originated, it was famous already in the ancient roman period. We will end the day having dinner in a local Osmiza, farms, indicated by branches, where people sell wine and food. Back to sleep in the center Trieste San Giusto harbour.

Early sailing in the direction of the Miramare Castle, built by order of Ferdinand Maximilian (1832–1867), of the House of Hausburg – brother of Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria. We will reach Grignano bay from where we will have a trekking through the old fishermen trails to a spot just above the sea called Costiera. Sunny with a great view, famous for the white limestone, pockets and edges. Night in the Grignano bay.

In the morning, we will sail to Sistiana Portopiccolo bay and anchor at the Yacht Club, winner at the last Barcolana sailing competition. After the seaside walk, we will reach the big walls in the Sistiana harbour. The spot offers interesting single and multi-pitches climbing, mostly on vertical faces. It is a perfect place also to try some lead climbing. Night in Portopiccolo, eco-friendly and car-free seaside village, with nice small shops and bars.

Sailing in direction of Duino Castle, just under the big cliffs of white limestone. In Duino the climbing is just above the sea and is mostly caratterized by long slabs, surrounded by the typical mediterrainian vegetation. Night in the small Duino bay.

Departure day.
